History of the Internet

1. 1957- The first satellite, Sputnik, is launched.
2. 1972- First email program created.
3. 1976- Ethernet is developed.
4. 1983- Internet Activities Board is created.
5. 1987- BITNET and CSNET merged to form CREN.
6. 1990- Advanced Network and Services was formed.
7. 1992- Internet Society is chartered.
8. 1995- Internet as we know it is launched.
9. 1996- Most Internet traffic is by independent ISP’s, MCI, AT&T, etc.
10. Today- We use the Internet for everything imaginable, and it keeps developing and forming new things to do.

FTP- File Transfer Protocol, used to copy a file from one host to another over the Internet.

1. Bandwidth- Range of transmission frequencies that a network can use. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the information that can travel.
2. Blog- A website where users can post a chronological up-to-date e-journal entry.
3. Broken Link/ Broken Graphic- A link that no longer works.
4. Client- A remote computer connected to a host or server. 
5. Connect Time- Amount of time spent connected to an internet service.
6. DNS Server- A database system the translates an IP address from a numeric IP address into text.
7. Download- To transfer a file from another computer to your computer.
8. Host- Any computer that can function as a beginning and endpoint of data transfers.

1.Public Domain- software that is free but not copyrighted
2.Search Engine- Google, Yahoo!, a website (program) that acts as a card catalog for the Internet.
3.Secured Site- A web page on the Internet that provides encryption software to protect user information. Shown by the locked padlock, and the "s" in the protocol.
4.Shareware- Freeware that is copyrighted, free to download for a trial basis
5.Site- A place on the WWW made up of pages, these pages can contain graphics, text, audio and video.
6.Title Bar- Displays name of web page and program use.
7.URL- Uniform Resource Locater
8.World Wide Web- WWW part of the address
9.Freeware- Free and copyrighted, reliable.

Internet Terms 4

1. Hyperlink: Text or pictures that allow you to go to another webpage when you click on it with your mouse.
2. Hypermedia: Movies, audio files, or programs that allow you to download or go to another page.
3. Hypertext: Text only that allows you to go to another page or see a text file.
4. IP address: Unique address each computer has. You only have on if you access the internet. A number.
5. ISP: Internet Service Provider. The company where you get your  internet access
6. Keyword: On a search engine. Keyword is the word or phrase that you type in to begin your search.
7. Link: Same as Hyperlink
8. Navigation Bar: Are directional tools like a menu that direct the user of the site to other pages within that site.
9. Protocol: http:// Lets anyone use and see the internet regardless of what type of computer they have.
